About Me

Fáilte!  So I’m Marteen and this is my website Marteen Lane – Tour Guide & Cultural Heritage Writer.  I’m a Galway-based tour guide from Co. Mayo with a BA (Hons) in Heritage Studies.  I have a passion for Ireland’s cultural heritage, particularly Galway’s cultural heritage, and I want to share that passion with you here and on my social media accounts.  I also have a special interest in women’s history, medieval history, and dark history.  When I’m not travelling around my little country I’m travelling to other countries, seeking cultural experiences, which I also like to share with you.

It’s all go here as I’ve set up my own walking tours in my adopted city of Galway.  I offer three unique walking tours that aim to showcase Galway from different perspectives.  HerGalway Walking Tour tells the stories of remarkable women from all walks of life associated with Galway.  Medieval Galway Tour transports the visitor back to medieval Galway, where they can still see the remnants of that period in history around the city.  Galway Dark Tour exposes the visitor to the murky world of murders, executions, and deaths, sharing with them Galway’s dark past.  I’ll soon be finishing a course where I’ll be a Fáilte Ireland approved Regional Guide.  I’m excited to be starting an MA in Irish Studies with NUIG in September, which will deepen my love and expertise in Ireland’s cultural heritage.

As the tagline states, I’m also a cultural heritage writer and I’m working on pitching articles on travel, culture, and heritage to different publications as a freelance writer.  I believe that experiencing cultural heritage responsibly and expressing our own individual cultures is a human right.  But what is Cultural Heritage?  According to the Culture In Development website:

Cultural Heritage is an expression of the ways of living developed by a community and passed on from generation to generation, including customs, practices, places, objects, artistic expressions and values.  Cultural Heritage is often expressed as either Intangible or Tangible Cultural Heritage.

Who knows where my adventures will take me.  I hope you will join me on this journey and enjoy reading my posts.  If you would like to hire me for paid freelance work, want to book me for a tour, or if you have any questions about Galway or Ireland in general, you can contact me at marteen.lane@gmail.com. Slán go fóill!

      2. I work with The Quiet Man Museum in Cong. It’s been closed for the winter but is reopening next week. I show people around the locations that were used in the film and serve customers in the gift shop. I also give a ghost tour for the public and the PaddyWagon buses with the museum. I can’t wait to get back to work. We get a lot of PaddyWagon buses coming through the village and a lot of CIE buses book The Quiet Man tour. Patrick from PaddyWagon was create for rounding up the troops for the ghost tour 🙂
